That time of the year again…

Gentle reader,

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. Endless rounds of “Pomp and Circumstance,” graduates with their freshly-minted diplomas heading out into the so-called real world, allergies (though tardy this year), and well-intentioned vows to be productive over the summer break (our professional equivalent of the New Year’s resolution).

In what is also becoming another seasonal ritual, there are upcoming trips to China for BenU faculty and students. From 13-28 May, Professor Tim Goines, Amanda Schmidt, and myself will be leading 19 students (15 from Benedictine as well as 2 respectively from Alvernia and Gwynedd Mercy Universities in Pennsylvania) on a short-term study abroad course, which examines China in global contexts. Our itinerary will be familiar to last year’s faculty seminar participants and to readers of this blog: Beijing, Dalian, and Xi’an. We will also be spending one day in Tianjin and plan to visit Nankai University there.

The student roster is: Varun Bhalla, William Dixon, Alejandra Farias, Gregory German, Antonio Gonzalez, Jacob Kennedy, Ryan Le, Ian Markert, Ericka Robinson, Hanan Salim, Harjot Sangha, Wajeeha Ariya Siddiqui, Richard Singletary, Samantha Triani, Nayeli Vasquez (BU); Kyle Covington and Monica Echeverri (Alvernia); and, Albert Rementer and Anna Lonergan (Gwynedd Mercy).

As part of my LITR 291 course, students will be posting two blog entries during the trip. Their posts will be the kernels of a longer travel-writing piece that will be produced at the conclusion of our journey. Please consider following our students blogs as they share with you their experiences in China.

Albert and Anna of Gwynedd Mercy will be blogging daily. You can follow their posts here http://gmercyuchina2014.wordpress.com

Finally, once the class trip is over 28 May, Benedictine University Professor Cheryl Heinz will be bringing over five students to conduct research on pollinators in China. Thanks to a grant from the ASIANetwork Student-Faculty Fellows Program for Collaborative Research in Asia, and generous support from the Freeman Foundation, Professor Heinz and myself will work with Benedictine students Lesa Do, Bichnu Le, Firdous Moin, Kyle Turcic, and Sivaranjini Velanthottukoottale in carrying out our research in Beijing, Shenyang, Dalian, and Sichuan. Information about the grant program and our project can be found here. http://www.asianetwork.org/2014/03/2014-student-faculty-fellows-program-benedictine-university/

We will also be blogging about our research.

Wishing you all a pleasant and, of course, productive summer!
